"Light Box 〈Galleries〉" 시리즈는 미술관의 주인공인 작품들이 없는, 남겨진 빈 공간과 빛, 그리고 공간적 구조에 주목한다.
작품이 사라진 자리에는 부재의 여백이 남는다. 그러나 그 공허는 비어 있지 않다. 오히려 공간을 채우는 빛, 벽의 질감, 건축적 리듬은 우리로 하여금 미술이 무엇으로 성립하는가를 다시 묻도록 한다.

미술작품은 단순한 물질이 아니라, 빛을 통해 관객의 눈앞에 드러나는 모습이다. 그리고 그 드러남은 항상 특정한 제도적 장치(갤러리라는 공간)안에서 의미를 획득한다. 그렇기에 갤러리는 단순한 전시장이 아니라, 작품을 작품으로 성립시키는 ‘조건’이며, 동시에 사회적 소통의 장이다.

나는 이번 작업을 통해 미술작품을 잠시 뒤로 하고, 그 자체로는 결코 주목받지 못했던 공간과 빛에 귀 기울인다. 그 빈 자리는 부재의 허무가 아니라, 오히려 시각예술의 본질을 드러내는 역설적 장치가 된다. 〈Galleries〉는 그렇게 물질과 관념, 순간성과 영속성, 작품과 제도 사이의 긴장을 응시하게 한다.

 

"Light Box 〈Galleries〉" series erases the artworks from exhibition spaces, leaving only empty walls, light, and architectural structures in view.
In the absence of the works, what remains is not emptiness but a charged interval. Light filling the space, the texture of the walls, and the rhythm of the architecture invite us to reconsider the very conditions under which art comes into being.

An artwork is not merely a physical object; it is the image that appears through light to the viewer’s eye. And this appearance always unfolds within an institutional framework<the gallery>that grants the work its meaning. In this sense, the gallery is not simply a container but a vital condition of art, as well as a site of social exchange.

By setting aside the artworks themselves, I draw attention to what is usually overlooked: the space and the light. The void that remains is not a sign of absence or loss, but rather a paradoxical device that reveals the essence of visual art. Galleries thus invites reflection on the tension between material and idea, ephemerality and permanence, artwork and institution.
