디지털 기술과 디자인의 접목은 작업과 소통방법, 그리고 새로운 발상에 이르기 까지 디자인 활동과 결과에 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 기술에 대한 장벽이 낮아지면서 많은 디자이너들은 새로운 기술을 어떻게 나의 것으로 만들 지에 대해 고민해 왔고 이제는 컴퓨터를 사용하지 않고는 디자인 작업이 불가능한 시대가 되었다. 이러한 디자인 환경의 변화는 역설적으로 시각디자인의 전통적인 원리와 과정에 대해서도 다시 생각해 보는 계기가 되고 있다. 컴퓨터 기술이 디자인 작업의 효율을 높여주는 것은 사실이나 오히려 디자이너가 작업 자체에 더욱 깊이 관여하는 것을 방해하는 것은 아닌지 생각해 본다.

시각디자인 그룹, 진달래의 도큐먼트 시리즈 3번째 책 “스케치 북 (Sketch Book)”은 11명의 시각디자이너들이 엮은 100부 한정판 책이다. 1인 생산품의 아름다움, 진품이 가지는 가치, 만질 수 있는 물질에 대한 경험 등은 어떤 시대에도 그 가치를 발하는 요소들일 것이다. 이 책의 모든 페이지는 고유하게 존재하며 같은 모습으로 복제될 수 없는 형식을 취하고 있다. 예술작품마저도 진품의 여부를 전문가의 의견이나 증명서로 결정하는 이 시대에 디자이너의 손끝에서 완성된 한 권의 화집을 통해 원본성이 가지는 의미에 대해 질문해 보고 싶다.

SKETCH BOOK

The combination of digital technology and design has ushered in various changes in design activities, from work and communication methods to the creation of innovative ideas. With technological barriers becoming lower and lower, many designers have thought hard about using new technology in their own unique way. Now, design has become impossible without computers. This change in the design environment has paradoxically provided a turning point in how we view the principles and processes of traditional visual design. I think that perhaps increasing design efficiency with computer technology might be an interruption since it prevents the designer from being more deeply involved in artwork creation.

The third book of the document series “Sketch Book” by the visual design group Jin-Dal-Rae , is a limited edition book of just 100 issues created by 11 visual designers. The beauty of something produced by one person, the value of a true original, the experience of something that cannot be touched are factors that are valuable across ages. All the pages of this book are original and come in a form that cannot be copied. In this age, where even works of art are decided by virtue of the opinions or certification of an expert, I would like to ask what the significance of originality is, through this book of drawings created by the designers' own hands.
