몇 년 전부터 거의 매일 숲속 산책을 하는 개인적인 루틴을 이어오고 있다. 나뭇잎 하나를 바라볼 때, 그 잎들이 모여 하늘을 덮는 나무의 구조를 볼 때, 그리고 그 사이를 걸으며 느끼는 감각은 시간이 지날수록 더 깊게 다가왔다. 그럴 때마다 나는 묻게 된다. 이 숲이 만들어내는 시각적 질서는 어떻게 나의 감정과 사고를 이토록 안정시키는가. 관심은 점차 자연의 형태 그 자체보다, 그 형태를 만들어내는 구조와 과정으로 옮겨갔다.

   생명은 언제나 어떤 형태로 구조화된다. 진화의 시간 속에서 형성된 생명의 구조, 인간 사회를 이루는 관계망, 지식이 축적되고 확장되는 방식, 그리고 뇌 안에서 작동하는 정보의 흐름은 서로 다른 영역에 존재하지만, 결국에는 닮은 구조를 공유하고 있다. 그 구조들이 겹쳐지며 드러내는 모습은 다시 우리를 자연의 형태로 되돌려 보낸다. 인간이 특정한 형태 앞에서 편안함을 느끼는 이유는, 어쩌면 우리가 그 구조 안에서 태어나고 살아왔기 때문일지도 모른다.

이 지점에서 나는 자연을 단순히 바라보는 것을 넘어, 그 구조를 하나의 체계로 이해해보고 싶어졌다. 자연을 수학과 과학의 언어로 이해하려는 시도는 오래전부터 이어져 왔다. 기하학적 정의에서 출발해 다양한 이론의 시각적 구현에 이르기까지, 우리는 자연 현상을 계산하고 구조화하며 공간 안에 재현해왔다. 이 과정은 언제나 인간의 인지와 감각, 즉 뇌의 작동 방식과 맞닿아 있다. 내가 경험해온 수많은 자연의 이미지, 예술 작품에 대한 기억, 그리고 자연을 설명하기 위해 축적되어온 알고리즘들은 하나의 작업 안에서 서로 연결된다고 생각한다.

   이번 작업은 그 연결을 실험하는 과정이었다. 질문을 던지고, 구조를 설정하고, 그 구조가 만들어내는 형태를 관찰하는 일. 결과보다 과정에 집중하는 시간 속에서, 나는 형태가 어떻게 생성되고 변형되는지를 지켜보았다. 이 과정에는 AI와의 협업이 포함되어 있다. 그것은 도구의 사용이 아니라 하나의 구조적 대화에 더 가까웠다. 질문에 대한 응답이 돌아오고, 그 응답을 다시 수정하며 방향을 조정하는 흐름 속에서, 나는 보이지 않는 네트워크의 작동을 느꼈다. 인간의 사고와 닮아 있으면서도 다른 방식으로 움직이는 그 구조는, 자연의 질서와도 어딘가 닮아 있었다.

숲에서 시작된 질문은 구조와 알고리즘을 통해 다시 물질 세계의 모습으로 돌아왔다. 이 작업은 서로 다른 언어로 표현된 하나의 질서를 탐색하는 과정이며, 그 안에서 나는 인간과 자연이 공유하는 구조적 아름다움을 발견하고자 했다.

   For several years now, I have maintained a personal routine of walking in the forest almost every day. When I look at a single leaf, when I observe the structure of a tree formed by countless leaves gathering to cover the sky, and when I walk among them, the sensations I experience have grown deeper over time. Each time, I find myself asking: how does the visual order created by this forest bring such stability to my emotions and thoughts? Gradually, my interest shifted from the forms of nature themselves to the structures and processes that generate those forms.

   Life is always organized into some kind of structure. The structures formed through evolution, the networks that constitute human society, the ways knowledge accumulates and expands, and the flows of information operating within the brain exist in different domains, yet ultimately share similar underlying patterns. As these structures overlap and reveal themselves, they return us once again to the forms of nature. The reason we feel a sense of comfort before certain forms may be because we were born and have lived within these very structures.

   At this point, I wanted to move beyond simply observing nature and attempt to understand its structure as a system. The effort to interpret nature through the languages of mathematics and science has continued for a long time. From geometric definitions to the visual realization of various theories, we have calculated, structured, and reconstructed natural phenomena within space. This process is always intertwined with human cognition and perception—that is, with the workings of the brain. I believe that the countless images of nature I have experienced, my memories of artworks, and the accumulated algorithms developed to explain natural phenomena all become interconnected within a single body of work.

This project was an experiment in exploring those connections. It involved posing questions, establishing structures, and observing the forms that emerged from them. By focusing on process rather than result, I watched how forms were generated and transformed. This process included collaboration with AI. It was not merely the use of a tool, but closer to a structural dialogue. Responses returned to my questions, and through revising those responses and adjusting direction, I sensed the operation of an invisible network. This structure, resembling human thought yet moving in a different way, felt in some sense akin to the order of nature.

   The question that began in the forest returned to the material world through structure and algorithm. This work is an exploration of a single order expressed in different languages, through which I sought to discover the structural beauty shared by humans and nature.
