bitforms gallery is pleased to announce a two person exhibition with C.E.B. Reas (b. 1972, United States) and Suzung Kim (b. 1967, Korea). This exhibit marks the debut of three new animated software installations and eleven unique prints by C.E.B. Reas. Also eight recent prints and a software piece by Suzung Kim will be on view, which utilize Reas' open source Processing software. An opening reception with both artists will take place Friday December 15 from 6 to 8 pm in the gallery.
New work from C.E.B. Reas' ongoing Process series explores the dialectical relationship between naturally evolved systems and those that are engineered and synthetic. The imagery evokes transformation, and visualizes systems in motion and at rest. Equally embracing the qualitative nature of human perception and the quantitative rules that define digital culture, organic form emerges from precise mechanical structures.
Using software as a generative tool, Process 12 constructs dense visual systems of activity, reminiscent of organic and crystalline surface textures. Process 11 operates similarly as a fluid system and utilizes a warm color palette. The C prints in this exhibit from the Process 8, 9, 11, and 12 structures, portraying dense tangled form, serve as static representations of the systems activated in Reas' custom software structures.
At the center of the gallery space, Process 9 (Interaction 1) is a malleable construction in software that visitors can physically influence by moving small circular nodes over a fluid projection surface. Epicenters of the composition shift in real time in response the visitors' choices.
C.E.B. Reas derives his software from short text instructions explaining processes that define networks. The instructions are expressed in different media including natural language, machine code, computer simulations, and static images. Each translation of these instructions reveals a different perspective, and may combine with the other forms of visualization to express a more complete representation of the constructed network of form.
Presently C.E.B. Reas' work is part of the Cybernetic Sensibility exhibition at the Daelim Museum in Seoul, October 25, 2006 through January 21, 2007. Reas' work is also part of the National Design Triennale at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York December 8, 2006 - July 29, 2007. Based in Los Angeles, C.E.B. Reas has exhibited and screened his work internationally in galleries and museums including bitforms gallery (New York), Eyebeam (New York), CCCB (Barcelona), STUK (Leuven), The Dallas Contemporary, Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia), National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design (Oslo), Institute for Contemporary Art (London), New Museum for Contemporary Art (New York), NTT ICC (Tokyo), ZKM (Karlsruhe), Telic (Los Angeles), BANK (Los Angeles), the Danish Film Institute (Copenhagen), [DAM] Berlin, and Kuenstlerhaus (Vienna), among other venues. In 2004 Reas was commissioned to create work for the Whitney Museum's Artport, and he was awarded the 2005 Golden Nica from Ars Electronica with Ben Fry. C.E.B. Reas is an Associate Professor at UCLA, and holds a masters degree from MIT in Media Arts and Sciences.
Suzung Kim is an artist and commercial designer who creates work using the open source Processing software designed by C.E.B. Reas and Ben Fry. Kim uses programming language as if it were a brush or pen, and merges Modernist traditions of Western painting with Eastern attitudes toward calligraphy and drawing. The delicate line quality of Kim's offset prints on paper complement the warm fluid washes of layered color in his screen-based works. These artworks may appear to be executed by hand, however Kim's painting and drawings techniques are fully expressed in software code.
Presently Suzung Kim's work is also part of the Cybernetic Sensibility exhibition at the Daelim Museum in Seoul, October 25, 2006 through January 21, 2007. Kim's work has also been exhibited at the Sonjae Museum of Art (Kyoungjoo), Seoul Museum of Art, the Samsung Digital Gallery (Shanghai), Multimedia Art Asia Pacific (Beijing), the School of Visual Arts (New York), and bitforms gallery (Seoul). The winner of numerous awards including the Macromedia People's Choice Award and prizes sponsored by Communication Arts and ID magazines, Kim lectures at Seoul National, Ewha, and Hongik Universities and at Korea National Art School. Kim also designs image processing for feature films, motion graphics, web, and interactive arts. Kim received a BFA and MFA from Seoul National University, and and additional MFA from School of Visual Arts in New York.

비디오 아트를 기점으로 시작되는 뉴미디어 아트의 이해는 작품을 통해 보여지는 이미지로부터 시작된다. 이러한 뉴미디어 아트가 보여주는이미지들은 때론 너무도 직설적이며 또 때론 당황스러울 만큼 공허하기도 하다. 그것은 왜 일까? 외국어를 배워가면서 그 언어에 채 익숙해지기도 전에 현지인과 같은 부드러운 억양으로 한 문장을 그럴싸하게 뱉어내곤 스스로 흠칫하는 경험을 한 번쯤 하게 된다. ‘뉴미디어'를 이해하고 구사하기 위한 우리의 언어 실력이 여기쯤 와 있기 때문은 아닐까? 작가의 의도가 자동화와 변수 그리고 모듈화와 같은 컴퓨터의 프로세스를 통해 다듬어 지고 관객의 개입을 통해 표현되는 뉴미디어 아트의 이해를 이미지와 외형적 형태의 해독에만 의존하려는 시도는 어쩌면 잘못 끼워진 단추인지도 모른다.
컴퓨터를 사용하는 뉴미디어 아트에 있어서 프로그래밍은 작업의 개념을 실제로 구현해 내기 위한 마치 머리 속에 존재하는 보이지 않는 소리를 음악으로 만들어 내는 작곡과 같은 행위이다. 작업의 생명이라 할 수 있는 개념은 소프트웨어라는 악보 속에 담기게 되고 이는 관객 혹은 유저라는 연주자(performer)에 의해 연주되는 것이다. 악보의 해석이 없이 제대로 된 연주를 해낼 수 없듯이 작가의 의도를 파악하고 그로부터 작품의 이미지와 외형을 읽어내어 소통하기 위해 소프트웨어 속에 담겨있는 개념의 이해가 수반되어야 한다. 이는 점차 소프트웨어를 통해 구현되고 있는 사회적 정책들과 문화적 시도를 제대로 읽어내기 위해서도 필수적인 요소이다. 이 두 작가의 작업을 통하여 프로그래밍과 개념 그리고 뉴미디어 아트의 속성과 가능성에 대한 진지하고도 근본적인 물음을 던져볼 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있을 것이다.
MIT의 Media Lab출신인 C.E.B Reas는 Eyebeam(New York), CCCB(Barcelona), STUK(Leuven), The Dallas Contemporary, Fabric Workshop and Museum(Philadelphia), National Museum of Contemporary Art(New York), NTT ICC(Tokyo), ZKM(Karlsruhe), Telic(Los Angeles), BANK(Los Angeles), the Danish Film Institute(Copenhagen),[DAM]Berlin and Kuenstlerhaus(Vienna) 등을 통한 활발한 전시 활동을 펼치고 있으며 2005년에는 1979년부터 행해지고 있는 미디어 아트 페스티발, Ars Electronica에서 최우수상인 Goden Nica를 수상하였다. 디지털 아티스트들의 아이디어 스케치 및 드로잉을 위한 소프트웨어로 사용되고 있는 프로세싱(Processing)의 개발자이기도 한 레아스(Reas)는 지난 몇 년간 프로세스 시리즈 (Process Series) 라는 작업을 해오고 있다. “과정”이라고 풀이될 수 있는 이 작업들은 언어와 같은 자연스럽게 진화된 시스템과 공학적 과정을 거쳐 개발된 합성적 시스템, 즉 기계의 시스템간의 변증법적 관계를 탐구하고 있다. 프린트와 영상이라는 형식을 통해 보여지는 이미지들은 레아스가 쓴 소프트웨어에 의해 만들어졌다. 그리고 이 소프트웨어들은 레아스가 쓴 짧은 영어 인스트럭션(Instruction)으로부터 기인한다. 이 영어 인스트럭션은 프로그래밍 언어, 그리고 프로그래밍
언어가 만들어 내는 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 그리고 이 시뮬레이션의 정지된 이미지인 프린트와 같은 각기 다른 미디어를 통해 표현된다. 이렇게 다른 미디어를 통하여 표현된 인스트럭션은 문자가 기계의 언어로 인해 해석되는 과정 즉 인간의 인식 과정을 기계의 언어가 인식해 가는 과정의 여러 가지 다른 관점들을 보여준다.
김수정은 C.E.B. 레아스가 개발한 프로세싱이라는 프로그램을 디자인의 도구로 활발하게 활용하고 있는 아티스트이다. 이번 2인 전에서 김수정은 비트맵이 아닌 벡터를 사용한 알고리드믹 드로잉을 전시한다. 선 긋기는 시각예술 교육의 가장 근본적인 단계이며 드로잉은 아티스트로서의 성향이 가장 솔직하게 나타날 수 있는 매체라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 소프트웨어 묘법은 아티스트 김수정이 주된 창작 도구로 사용하고 있는 컴퓨터를 이용한 선 긋기 작업이다. 컴퓨터의 수학적 논리가 프로그래밍 언어로 구현되며 제작되는 이 선 긋기 이미지들은 작가가 얘기하듯 ‘수적 논리의 이미지적 발현'인 셈이다. 김수정은 컴퓨터의 논리를 사용하여 마치 미술가가 데생을 하기 위해 조심스럽게 한 선 한 선을 그어 나가듯 자신만의 선 찾기를 시도하고 있는 것이다. 컴퓨터로 인해 총천연색의 현란한 이미지 제작과 또 그들의 무제한의 복제가 가능해진 이 시대에 이러한 그의 나만의 선 찾기 시도는 무의미하게 조차 느껴질 지도 모른다. 그러나 그의 프린트에서 보여지는 선들의 ‘부서질 듯한 섬세함'에서는 컴퓨터가 아닌 김수정의 선 긋기가 분명하게 보인다. 아티스트의 손 맛이 느껴지는 선 긋기를 프로그래밍이라는 수학적 논리를 통해 구현해 내고 있다.
C.E.B. 레아스는 바로 뉴미디어 아트의 특성인 프로그래밍이라는 시스템과 개념의 상관관계에 대한 작업을 보여준다. “art as an idea”를 강조하며 60년대 개념미술과 미니멀리즘의 선두 주자로 활동했던 솔 르윗의 영향을 받은 레아스는추상적 개념이 인간의 언어로 전환되고 그 인간의 언어가 다시 기계의 언어인 프로그래밍 언어로 재해석되어 보여지는 과정을 탐구하며 뉴미디어 아트의 개념 예술로서의 방향을 제시하고 있다. 김수정 역시 프로그래밍이라는 행위를 개념적으로 접근하는 작가이다. 레아스가 개발한 프로세싱으로 작업을 하고 있는 그는 드로잉과 페인팅이라는 전통적인 매체에서 볼 수 있는 질감이라는 성질을 개념화하고 프로그래밍을 통해 이를 재현한다. 모니터 상에서 보여지는 데이터로서의 재현과 프린트로 보여지는 개념의 질적인 재현이라는 두 가지 다른 결과물은 컴퓨터가 지니는 예술적 표현 매체로서의 한계와 가능성을 개념적으로 규정하고 프로그래밍을 통해 이를 실험,증명하는 시도인 것이다.
서울대학교와 School of Visual Arts에서 수학한 김수정은 뉴욕 SVA메인 갤러리와 샌프란시스코 모스콘 센터, 서울의 우덕 갤러리 등 국내외의 많은 전시에 참여했으며, 광주비엔날레 EIP 디자인 연구 책임자와 아트디렉터/프로젝트 매니저를 담당하는 등 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 또한 School of Visual Arts의 Paula Rhodes Memorial Awards, Macromedia People's Choice Award ‘97에서 멀티미디어 부문 최고상, 아시아 디지털 아트 어워드에서 입상, Communication Arts의 인터랙티브 디자인 애뉴얼 본상 등 많은 수상을 하였다.
